Six years ago, Hotel Astoria in De Haan was in the middle of a major renovation. During the Covid period, the hotel underwent a complete transformation in just six months. For the corridor walls, the team chose Clicwall. Today, after welcoming around 150,000 guests, we returned to see how it’s performing. The big question: how well does Clicwall hold up in a hotel where suitcases, cleaning trolleys and hundreds of guests pass through every single day?
Owner Colin Dearman bought the hotel with his business partner in October 2019. Their goal? Open by summer 2020. To make that happen, they had to renovate 3,000 m² and 65 hotel rooms in record time.
In a hotel renovation, every day counts. The sooner the rooms and corridors are ready, the sooner you can welcome guests again. That called for smart material choices. A traditional wall build-up with plasterboard, filler and paint would simply take too long. Together with interior architect Danny Hoorelbeke from Project Vijf, Colin chose Clicwall: ready-to-install wall panels that click together cleanly and dust-free. Exactly what they needed to open the doors as quickly as possible.
The biggest advantage of Clicwall? Once the panels are installed, the walls are immediately finished. No painting. No drying times. No extra contractors coming in afterwards. That made a real difference within Hotel Astoria’s tight renovation schedule: faster opening times, less coordination on site and a clean, high-end result from day one.
The design matched perfectly too. Colin and Danny used the doors and furniture as the starting point, then searched for a wall solution that would blend in seamlessly. Clicwall delivered exactly that. The wall panels in Dainty Oak café noir feature the same design as the HPL finish used for the doors and bespoke furniture in the rooms. The result? A consistent interior flow from corridor to bedroom.
The corner profiles supplied in the same colour as the walls are a clever detail. Everything works together beautifully.”
A hotel like Astoria sees plenty of wear and tear every day. Suitcases scrape past the walls, cleaning trolleys roll through the corridors and hundreds of guests check in and out. In those conditions, traditional painted walls quickly start to show marks and damage.
But six years later, Clicwall still looks as good as new, says owner Colin: “We welcome around 30,000 guests every year. That means 30,000 suitcases. Yet you can’t see a trace of them.” No peeling paint. No damaged corners. No visible scratches. Because the panels are up to three times more impact-resistant than plasterboard and easy to clean, they keep their sleek appearance year after year.
And that’s exactly why Clicwall remains a popular choice for hotels, student accommodation and other high-traffic spaces where durability matters just as much as design. You save time during installation and keep your interior looking sharp for longer.
