Verneo HPL: a new era for HPL thanks to a 100% biobased core

Meet our latest Wood Revolution: Verneo HPL, featuring a fully biobased core, made from 88% renewable raw materials and produced with a resin that emits 67% less CO₂ than traditional adhesives. Thanks to our in-house developed resin technology, Verneo HPL delivers the same performance as our trusted HPL, but with a significantly lower environmental impact. This next-generation HPL will soon be introduced to the Dutch market with a selection of decors.
From fossil to biobased resins
“The secret of Verneo HPL lies in the core of the sheet,” explains Gertjan Vancoillie, R&D Engineer. “While traditional HPL still uses fossil-based phenolic resins, Verneo HPL switches to a 100% biobased alternative. The result: a kraft paper core infused with biobased resin, completely free from fossil materials.”
Verneo HPL consists of 88% biobased raw materials—a significant increase compared to the 57% in standard HPL. What’s more, the production of the biobased resin results in up to 67% less CO₂ emissions than traditional glues.
And the decorative top layer? It remains identical to that of the standard version. So, the familiar quality, appearance, and technical performance of our HPL remain fully intact.
“Verneo HPL isn’t just a concept on paper—it’s a scalable innovation that will soon be introduced as part of our range on the Dutch market,” adds Timothy D’hoop, R&D Engineer.
And there’s more: Verneo isn’t limited to HPL alone. The technology will also be applicable to the production of bio-based particleboard.
World-first Cradle to Cradle certification
Our HPL is no stranger to innovation. In December 2024, our entire HPL range became the first in the world to receive the Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze V4.0 certification. This internationally recognized label evaluates products across five categories: material health, circularity, water and soil stewardship, climate impact, and social fairness.
